Protecting Wildlife….

Wildlife Queensland is ‘Your Voice for your Wildlife’’. We speak out against those who are intent on destroying wildlife habitat: by monitoring wildlife populations we draw attention to their plight and by consulting with government departments we make our views known at every level.

We successfully helped to stop the recreational hunting of duck and quail in Queensland and we are vocal in opposing the introduction of gill netting and the proposal for targeted killing of rays and sharks. Read more about our conservation efforts to help protect wildlife and their habitat.

Influencing Choices….

Crucial changes are needed to halt the destructive nature of many types of reckless and relentless development. Our determination has resulted in many conservation wins in recent decades – read all about our achievements such as the Great Barrier Reef campaign and our efforts to stop logging and sand-mining on Fraser Island.

Our wildlife campaigns provide hope for those who feel helpless in the face of the many threats to global biodiversity such as diminishing resources such as water and the need for sustainable energy sources. We also assist and advise people who have both desirable and less-desired encounters with animals. For instance how to deal with finding a snake hiding in the kitchen or a brush turkey digging up the garden.

Engaging Communities…..

As a state-wide organisation, WPSQ works in cooperation with government, business and other conservation groups to develop policies to ensure the protection of our state’s natural heritage such as the Great Barrier Reef, mallee country, rivers and catchments, rainforests, mangrove and other coastal ecosystems.

We provide onground actions which are out of the ordinary and highly educational for most Australians, leaving people feeling that they have contributed something positive and real to the world.

Much of this work is done locally through our network of branches.

Bayside Branch, located in the Brisbane area, campaigns to protect Moreton Bay and koala habitat. The branch organises Moreton Bay cruises, spotlights for koalas, greater gliders and other nocturnal wildlife and supports a native plant nursery.

Brisbane Branch pioneered ecotourism in the city of Brisbane with its tremendously popular Batty Boat cruises and continues to support urban dwellers in the quest to keep our back yards ‘wildlife-friendly’ and environmentally interesting.’

Upper Dawson Branch campaigns for wise use of water in the Dawson River catchment. The branch has field trips each year to areas of natural interest such as the sandstone ecosystems of Isla Gorge National Park, the region’s unique mound springs known as ‘boggomosses’ and various locations along the track followed by Ludwig Leichhardt when he explored this area 150 years ago.

HOW WE DO IT

We are a non-profit incorporated association with no political affiliations. We have over 3500 supporters linked through a simple structure consisting of an elected governing council, specialised staff and dedicated volunteers at head office in Brisbane and branches throughout the state.

Our members come from all walks of life – professionals, retirees, students, enthusiastic amateurs from a huge variety of backgrounds in business, industry, agriculture, government, the arts, science, education – all with a common interest in wildlife and our natural environment. As individuals, we all have unique talents and experiences. In a community group, we can learn from each other, build on these talents and be more effective and influential where it matters most.

What distinguishes us from other conservation groups is our network of branches across Queensland, providing grassroots knowledge and action at the local level. Our strength lies in our ability to translate problems into practical solutions – community participation, however small or large, is the key.

Our budget is small – but our passion for the cause is big. We don’t let monetary shortfalls deter us from achieving our goals – there’s no quick wins in conservation. When you donate to Wildlife Queensland, you know that your generosity pays off and your contribution is evident.

WILDLIFE QUEENSLAND RESEARCH GRANTS

Wildlife Queensland launched its Student Research Grants Program in 2010 – available to students at Queensland Universities. The 2011 round is now open.

Eligible research projects are those which investigate methods of addressing or reversing the decline in native plant and animal species or their habitat, or other applied conservation outcomes in Queensland. These include biodiversity conservation, vegetation communities and regional ecosystems.

Five grants of $1000 each were awarded in 2010 and another five will be up for grabs in 2011.

Every year Wildlife Queensland recognises the achievements and efforts of our members through our special award ceremony held at the annual dinner in September. The 2011 nominations are now open.

The Margaret Thorsborne Award for an outstanding contribution by a member.

Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland Head Office

Our head office, located in Brisbane, is the hub of the Society’s work.

We deal with the daily demands of state-wide environmental issues and operate one of Queensland’s largest conservation organisations.

Head office is also the administrative and marketing centre of the country’s leading nature magazine Wildlife Australia.

It is the focal point for major campaigns and policy development and the driving force behind significant wildlife projects. The Society is represented at the local level by a number of volunteer-run branches across Queensland.
